The Olympic Museum is situated
in a magnificent park on the
shores of Lake Geneva. To
maintain the harmony of the
surrounding landscape, many of
the building's five levels are
below ground. The ecology is
also well served by the
museum's air-conditioning
system, which utilizes the
constant temperature of the
water from Lake Geneva. The
exterior surface of the museum
is made entirely of marble from
Thasos, a reminder of the origin
of the Games.
Completed in 1993, the museum
serves as more than an
exhibition center. It also
functions as an educational
organization and an international
cultural center, hosting concerts,
debates, conferences, auctions
and art exhibitions. In 1995, the
museum was awarded the
prestigious European Museum of
the Year award.
